Micromechanics-based model for trends in toughness of ductile metals

چکیده
Relations between fracture toughness and microstructural details have been calculated for ductile materials based on a dilatational plasticity constitutive model that has recently been proposed. The model generalizes the Gurson model to account for both void growth and coalescence with explicit dependence on void shape and distribution effects. Based on a small scale yielding formulation of crack growth, toughness trends are determined as a function of yield stress, strain-hardening, initial porosity, void shape and spacing as well as void spacing anisotropy. Distinctions are drawn between the engineering fracture toughness, which is typically associated with 0.2 mm of crack growth, and the theoretical toughness based on coalescence of the crack tip with the first void ahead of it. Comparison with one set of experimental data for a steel is made for which a fairly complete characterization of the microstructure is available. 2002 Acta Materialia Inc. Probabilistic Modeling of Brittle Fracture Including 3-D Effects on Constraint Loss and Ductile Tearing
This study presents a probabilistic, 3-D framework to describe brittle fracture in structural components which incorporates weakest link statistics and a micromechanics model reflecting local damage of material. The Weibull stress (a,) emerges as a fracture parameter to define conditions leading to local material failure. This parameter is correlated with the macroscopic loading and used to des...

A phenomenological voidÐcrack nucleation model for ductile metals with second phases is described which is motivated from fracture mechanics and microscale physical observations[ The voidÐcrack nucleation model is a function of the fracture toughness of the aggregate material\ length scale parameter "taken to be the average size of the second phase particles in the examples shown in this writin...
متن کاملModeling the brittle–ductile transition in ferritic steels: dislocation simulations
We present a model for the brittle–ductile transition in ferritic steels based on two dimensional discrete dislocation simulations of crack-tip plasticity. The sum of elastic fields of the crack and the emitted dislocations defines an elasto–plastic crack field. Effects of crack-tip blunting of the macrocrack are included in the simulations. The plastic zone characteristics are found to be in a...

The paper focuses on the strength and toughness of joints produced by transient liquid phase (TLP) bonding in the Cu–Sn system. It is motivated by potential applications of TLP bonding in attachment of high-temperature wide bandgap devices to ceramic substrates. Model test specimens suitable for mechanical testing are developed, utilizing substrates of oxide dispersion strengthened copper. Thre...

The effects of silicon (Si) on the mechanical properties and fracture toughness of heavy-section ductile cast iron were investigated to develop material for spent-nuclear-fuel containers. Two castings with different Si contents of 1.78 wt.% and 2.74 wt.% were prepared. Four positions in the castings from the edge to the center, with different solidification cooling rates, were chosen for micros...
